Why Choose
Contemporary Care in New Jersey?
Contemporary Care has been serving patients across multiple states for over 25 years, and New Jersey residents have access to the same clinical team and treatment standards as patients seen at our in-person offices in Connecticut and Florida.
Our team includes board-certified psychiatrists, nurse practitioners, and licensed therapists who work together to build treatment plans that fit each patient. We are not a one-size-fits-all practice. Clinicians meet weekly to review complex cases, so every patient benefits from the input of a group of experienced mental health professionals rather than a single provider.
Contemporary Care is among the most practiced TMS and Spravato providers in the country. Dr. Tarique Perera, founder and clinical director, is the founding president of the International Clinical TMS Society and the first author of the society’s published TMS Guidelines. The practice is also one of the most experienced Spravato providers in the United States, with Dr. Perera serving on Janssen’s Advisory Board.
Beyond the clinical team, our administrative staff works to make the process as smooth as possible for patients from the first call through ongoing care. We prioritize timely appointments, clear communication, and a patient experience that feels supportive rather than rushed.

We’re Here to Help You Feel Better
Mental Health Disorders | A Guide for New Jersey Residents
Mental health disorders affect the way people think, feel, and function day to day. These conditions range widely in severity, from short-term disruptions to long-term challenges that interfere with work, relationships, and daily life. Common conditions include depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, PTSD, ADHD, OCD, and eating disorders.
There is no single cause behind most mental health conditions. They typically develop from a combination of genetic, environmental, and psychological factors. Traumatic experiences, chronic stress, and major life changes can all play a role in the onset or progression of symptoms.
Mental health conditions are medical conditions, not personal failings. They are rooted in biology and brain chemistry and deserve the same level of attention as any physical illness.
A licensed professional can help identify what is going on through a psychiatric evaluation. These evaluations may include neuropsychological and neurocognitive assessments that help diagnose conditions like ADHD, mood disorders, personality disorders, memory concerns, and more.
For New Jersey Residents:
Contemporary Care provides telehealth psychiatric services throughout New Jersey. Adults across the state can connect with our clinical team through secure video appointments for evaluations, medication management, and ongoing mental health care. Getting started takes one call.
Why Choose Contemporary Care for Ketamine Therapy?
For residents exploring ketamine therapy, finding a provider with real depth of experience matters. Contemporary Care is the leading ketamine and Spravato provider in the United States, and that position reflects years of clinical work, not just a claim. Our founder, Dr. Tarique Perera, sits on the national board for ketamine treatment and plays an active role in setting the standards that practices across the country follow. When you receive care through Contemporary Care, you are working with a team whose approach is shaped by the most current clinical thinking in the field.
Why Choose Contemporary Care for TMS Therapy?
TMS therapy has helped many residents who had not seen results from medication alone. As the number one TMS provider in the United States, Contemporary Care brings a level of experience that is difficult to match. Dr. Tarique Perera has spent years at the center of TMS development, serving as founding president of the International Clinical TMS Society and as the first author of the society’s published TMS Guidelines. The thousands of patients our team has treated reflect not just volume but the kind of hands-on experience that produces reliable outcomes. Patients interested in TMS can connect with our team through a telehealth visit to discuss eligibility and next steps.
Difference between a Psychiatrist and a Psychologist?
Many people feel uncertain about where to turn when seeking mental health support—should you see a psychiatrist or a psychologist? While both professionals are trained to understand the brain, emotions, thoughts, and behavior, there are key differences in their education, approach, and scope of practice.
Psychiatrist
Psychiatrists are medical doctors (MDs or DOs) who attend medical school followed by four to five years of residency or fellowship training in psychiatry. Because of their medical background, psychiatrists can diagnose mental health conditions, prescribe medications, and provide psychotherapy or counseling. Their ability to manage both the medical and psychological aspects of mental health makes them especially helpful for individuals who may benefit from medication as part of their treatment plan.
Psychologist
Psychologists typically earn a doctoral degree (Ph.D. or Psy.D.) in psychology, which involves extensive training over at least five years. They specialize in psychological testing and assessments, including neuropsychological and neurocognitive evaluations. Psychologists also provide psychotherapy and counseling, helping individuals manage emotional and behavioral challenges through talk therapy. While some states allow psychologists to prescribe medications with additional training, Florida does not currently permit psychologists to prescribe medication.
Which One Should You See?
If you’re unsure, a good first step is speaking with a mental health clinic that offers psychiatric services. This ensures you’ll receive the most appropriate evaluation and treatment based on your unique needs.
Take the First Step Toward Feeling Better
