We’re Here to Help You Feel Better

Mental Health Disorders | A Comprehensive Guide

Mental health disorders affect how individuals think, feel, and behave. These conditions can range from mild and short-term disruptions to severe, long-lasting challenges that interfere with everyday life. The impact of a mental health disorder is deeply personal—it can be a manageable inconvenience for some, while for others, it significantly hinders their ability to function and thrive. Common mental health conditions include anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, PTSD, OCD, and eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia.

There’s no single cause behind mental health disorders. Instead, they often arise from a combination of genetic, environmental, and psychological factors. Traumatic experiences like abuse, neglect, or loss, as well as chronic stress and major life transitions, can all contribute to the onset or worsening of symptoms.

Unfortunately, despite growing awareness, mental health is still misunderstood and stigmatized. Many people still view these conditions as signs of personal weakness or character flaws. In reality, mental health disorders are legitimate medical conditions—often rooted in biology and brain chemistry—that deserve the same attention and care as physical illnesses.

To properly identify mental health conditions, licensed professionals may recommend a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation and testing. These can include neuropsychological and neurocognitive assessments that help diagnose conditions like ADHD, autism, traumatic brain injury, learning disabilities, mood and psychotic disorders, memory loss, personality disorders, and even malingering.

If you’re struggling with your mental health or suspect something isn’t quite right, it’s important to seek help. A qualified mental health professional can guide you through diagnosis and treatment options, helping you take the first step toward healing and recovery.

Difference between a Psychiatrist and a Psychologist?

Many people feel uncertain about where to turn when seeking mental health support—should you see a psychiatrist or a psychologist? While both professionals are trained to understand the brain, emotions, thoughts, and behavior, there are key differences in their education, approach, and scope of practice.

Psychiatrist

Psychiatrists are medical doctors (MDs or DOs) who attend medical school followed by four to five years of residency or fellowship training in psychiatry. Because of their medical background, psychiatrists can diagnose mental health conditions, prescribe medications, and provide psychotherapy or counseling. Their ability to manage both the medical and psychological aspects of mental health makes them especially helpful for individuals who may benefit from medication as part of their treatment plan.

Psychologist

Psychologists typically earn a doctoral degree (Ph.D. or Psy.D.) in psychology, which involves extensive training over at least five years. They specialize in psychological testing and assessments, including neuropsychological and neurocognitive evaluations. Psychologists also provide psychotherapy and counseling, helping individuals manage emotional and behavioral challenges through talk therapy. While some states allow psychologists to prescribe medications with additional training, Florida does not currently permit psychologists to prescribe medication.

Which One Should You See?

If you’re unsure, a good first step is speaking with a mental health clinic that offers psychiatric services. This ensures you’ll receive the most appropriate evaluation and treatment based on your unique needs.

Take the First Step Toward Feeling Better
